Martinis recipes can be made with either vodka or gin. Our taste panel's preference was for the gin, but try them both and decide for yourself. Be warned, this is a strong and serious drink.
Perhaps the simplest of all cocktails, what the martini lacks in ingredients it more than makes up for in mystique – and as cocktail historian David Wondrich observes, where simplicity and mystique collide, almost inevitably “you get religion”. Though zealotry might be a better word: rarely has so much high-falutin’ rubbish been talked about a glass of cold booze.
With Bond firmly rebuffed, this is what we believe to be the most elegant way to make a Martini, the dry way, the classic Martini. Gin. Dry vermouth, and not much of it. Meditative stirring with ice. A chilled cocktail glass. A lemon twist or olives. (Use three olives, because one is too few and bartenders whisper that two olives begets bad luck.) A reasonably high alcohol tolerance will also come in handy. Sip your Martini at your leisure—or until it veers towards room temperatures.
Step
Fill a metal shaker with cracked ice
Pour in the dry vermouth, stir briefly, and strain out
Add 4 ounces of gin.you want it around 94 proof.Stir briskly for about 10 seconds
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with an olive or a lemon twist
Editor's Note:
This recipe makes a dry martini. Use less vermouth for an extra-dry martini; use more for a "wet" martini. You may also serve the martini over ice in a rocks glass.
