This follows the Paramount Wars story arc, which, luckily for the genre this falls into, is one of the more action-packed in the franchise. The cut-scenes are finely-crafted, the audio-visuals will make you feel as if you have just entered a TV episode, and, generally, everything is a joy to look at… as long as you are a One Piece fan, that is. This is one of those titles whose story simply can't be enjoyed by those who don't know what this is all about and, as such, most events and character behaviour will go over the head of those people.

Although Burning Blood leaves the length of the Paramount War quite short, it does bring a number of different game modes to preserve interest. The diversity of the game modes provides a number of different avenues for players to hone their skills and challenge the best in the business.

The simple gameplay is both a blessing and a curse. Considering there’s a huge cast of characters (with over 50 of them available at launch), it means that players can jump into different characters without having to learn new combo attacks. There are unique specials (which are done by pressing the left bumper and then a face button) for each character, but that’s really all the depth there is to learning one. This keeps the game from being like the more competitive fighters out there, though it should be said that it’s also not aiming for that audience.

Luckily, unlocking most features doesn't take too long. Having said that, though, the story mode itself is not without issues, with the most annoying one being how, as mentioned before, this is more like a tutorial than an actual mode that you have to play through. This results in battles that might range from very challenging to almost impossible... but only as long as someone doesn't follow the on-screen hints, and actually manage to finish a round in a matter of minutes.

Burning Blood delivers crisp visuals that ring true to the original manga and anime. The movement and execution of moves are smooth and easy on the eye, some of the fight scenes can be a little overwhelming at first and you might find yourself waiting for the dust to settle and realise that you have been on the receiving end of a 39 hit combo for the last five seconds. The background music and SFX are quite comfortable allowing for continued play without the fear of repetition. Voices are all subtitled so the absence of an English dubbed option may be frustrating for some players new to the series but traditional fans should feel right at home.

While One Piece: Burning Blood has its fair share of issues, it’s really great to see such an important and interesting story arc get an interactive adaptation. Sadly, though, splitting up the narrative to fit different character perspectives makes it harder to understand for those that don’t follow the manga. That said, this fact is ultimately pretty fitting as it shows that the game is only for dedicated One Piece fans.
